This position exists to lead and promote a safe and healthy work environment at all Tastepoint facilities for employees and visitors by proactively establishing, maintaining, and implementing all environmental, employee safety, hazmat safety and security programs in a manner that complies with all Federal, State, Regulatory Agencies and Company policies. The incumbent shall stay abreast of EHS legislation; develop learning objectives and lead employee training and educational initiatives on policies and practices. Seek continuous improvement in a plant, lab and office environment, ensure employees understand safety requirements and participate in a culture of safety.

 

How you will spend your time:

Administration, Documentation and Monitoring of Environmental, Health and Safety will include but is not limited to:

  • Maintain company EHS programs and training; continued alignment with IFF Policy and Procedure as applicable.
  • Maintain current EHS Program on Safety Tab of the Intranet.
  • Develop and communicate EHS strategies, goals and initiatives. 
  • Prepare EHS reports for management
  • Develop learning objectives and lead company-wide training/education initiatives face-to-face and on-line.
  • Track certifications and coordinate training initiatives for Forklifts, HazCom-Right to Know, LOTO, etc.
  • Maintain DOT, IATA Compliance by keeping Shipping/Logistics employees current with Certification.
  • Audit programs for compliance and monitor employee adherence to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

Conduct New Hire Safety Orientation and Annual Refreshers:

  • Coordinate training programs, develop education materials and track for:
    • Company Stop for Safety Program
    • Right to Know/HazCom
    • PPE
    • Oversee Respiratory Protection
      • Organize annual PFT and monitor historical results
    • Blood Bourne Pathogens
    • Fork Lift Safety
    • Lock Out Tag Out
    • Confined Space Entry
    • HAZWOPER - Spill Team
    • Fire Protection /Fire Drill/Emergency Evacuation
    • First Aid/CPR/AED
    • Maintenance specific training, DOT specific training and requirements
    • General Safety Awareness
    • Ergonomics – Lifting, pushing, pulling, bending
    • Contractor training with company safety and GMP rules

Track and Monitor WC Accidents, General Incidents and LTI:

  • Complete annual OSHA reporting post and keep track of KPI’s
  • Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses
  • Report to HR if a disciplinary or further discovery process is warranted

Safety Committee Chairman and Safety Audits:

  • Lead monthly Safety Committee meetings to include a formal agenda with meeting minutes.
    • Coordinate recertification of the Safety Committee
  • Conduct Monthly Safety and Security Audits, document safety infractions/violations and communicate results.
  • Conduct monthly EHS Audits as needed to evaluate engineering controls, combustible dust, noise levels, etc.
    •  Documents, communicates and implements corrective action for all safety infractions.

 

Demonstrate other core competency values including:

  • Demonstrate sense of urgency when safety concerns are reported or observed.
  • Take initiative to learn and understand operations.
  • Perform all work, be vigilant of, and utilize all necessary personal safety equipment to avoid injury and minimize hazard and properly enforce and ensure compliance of OSHA regulation, industry safety standards, safe material handling, and company policies in a GMP environment.
  • Report and investigate accidents, may require documenting the accident in writing
  • Attend in-house workshops, training seminars and meetings, when requested, to ensure current certification, job knowledge, safety practices, and operational efficiency

Produce Safe and Legal Products:

  • Each of us as Tastepoint employees share in the commitment to food safety, security and quality management by producing safe and legal products; to achieve this, each of us is responsible for keeping our food supply secure and free of tampering or contamination.  In your role as EHS Specialist, you have the responsibility for maintaining a culture of safety.
      • Exercise sound judgment on granting facility access and the handling of uninvited visitors
      • Maintain full awareness of facility, mindful of visitors and employees who leave and enter the facility

Professional Training and Development as an EHS Specialist requires incumbent to gain knowledge of: 

  • Production equipment and processes
  • How chemicals react to one another or when subjected to conditions such as heat, light or simple chemical reactions
  • Safety assessment of materials used in the facility and identifying appropriate PPE’s to be worn

About You:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and without jeopardizing the quality of product or the safety of coworkers or the general public. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Demonstrated Technical Writing Abilities to compose SOP’s, Employee Training Materials and Written Safety Program.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and know-how of the principles, standards, and techniques of safety and occupational health, experience in planning, organizing, training and implementing programs.
  • Proficient capabilities using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and On-line programs to compose and reply to emails, issue user certifications, develop presentations and to deploy and manage training initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively influence individuals, partner with departments to achieve desired safety compliance results, and interface with all levels and reporting lines.
  • Possess critical thinking skills and demonstrated ability to analyze an issue/problem, determine root cause, and recommendations for an effective and efficient resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, prioritize work efficiently, and meet deadlines
  • Must be able to tolerate an environment of known food allergens and ability to wear all Personal Protective Equipment and clothing when required
  • Must possess sight and hearing to conduct audits, evaluate compliance, and take pictures of good practices and any violation in all Company lab and plant environments.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Chemical Engineering or related field along with 7 plus years of EHS compliance experience in a manufacturing environment preferably Food, Flavor or Specialty Chemical Industry. 
  • Must possess at least 5 years of experience in leading Safety Committees, conducting audits, interpreting regulations and participating in the development of EHS strategies.
  • Must possess at least 5 years of experience developing training curriculum, associated materials and knowledge checks along with leading training initiatives. 
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise of OSHA regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the storage, clean up and emergency response to hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret Federal and State Regulations and various documents such as safety rules, SDS’s, formulations, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, company processes and forms in the English language. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations 
  • Ability to generate statistical reports, effectively write/speak/train staff in English (written and verbal)
  • Ability to define and solve practical problems, collect data.
  • Ability to ascertain and ensure the proper use of all equipment, forklifts, and PPE use to avoid injury, danger or hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to apply principles, inspect conditions and engineering controls, interpret results.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS:

  • GMP knowledge highly desired
  • OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Certification

This job has these special vision requirements: 

  • Peripheral vision, depth perception along with close and distant vision to read containers, SDSs, SOPs, recognize fork truck traffic, ascertain hazard area and confined space areas and conduct Lock Out/Tag Out.
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors of raw materials, hazards, finished product and to read labels
  • Ability to visually inspect and audit Facilities, take pictures of violations and best practices and record findings
