Senior/Principal Sensory Scientist

 


Reporting to the Global R&D Enabling Technologies Sensory Science Lead, we are seeking a Senior/Principal Scientist to act as a sensory scientific lead on cross-functional project teams. You’ll consult, design, and manage appropriate descriptive, discrimination and consumer guidance tests to enhance product knowledge and report findings in context of project objectives/business goals.
Furthermore, you will be an integral member of the strategic growth and development of the sensory department and the European region. Helping to innovate new methodologies to understand human response, including biometric and implicit test methods.  The senior scientist/sensory scientist provides professional guidance and enable project leaders to define and progress towards measurable sensory targets.  You’ll also be responsible of allocating sensory testing resources in accord with company priorities and develop new methods to gain product understanding. 

This position is accountable for ensuring standards of quality that meet or exceed customer expectations by adhering to strict testing protocols that have been validated for accuracy & reliability.  Moreover, the senior/principal sensory scientist ensures compliance with IFF safety and security policies and manage relationships with other Sensory Scientists within and outside of IFF, including groups at customers and external research collaborators.  You should expect some travel in this position. 

 

Typical duties of a Senior/Principal Sensory Scientist include:
•    Create designs to meet specific project objectives.
•    Develop new methods to advance R&D needs.
•    Develop and execute strategy to develop new world-class sensory methods.
•    Assist company-wide projects towards successful completion of sensory designs across market regions, ingredients and applications.
•    Apply Scientific Method to provide solutions.
•    Participate in development of work-plans for conducting an experiment or series of experiments.
•    Analyze all technical aspects of projects and recommend methods and techniques to be used and principles to be applied.
•    Troubleshoot issues as they arise.
•    Perform analysis and interpret test results; form conclusions on experiments conducted.
•    Write comprehensive experimental reports.
•    Supervise the performance of research; assign and/or coordinate work.
•    Prepare and present technical papers and presentations for internal customers/contacts.
•    Provide guidance to staff to improve research skills and to increase understanding of techniques and procedures utilized.
•    Remain current with relevant scientific literature.
•    Adhere to all safety and quality requirements; enhance site safety.

 

Job Requirements

•    Master’s degree or bachelor’s degree plus 8-15 years in Sensory with proven track record and strong applied statistics knowledge and experience.
•    Strong business acumen and industry experience in sensory analysis of food materials is essential; experience in applied statistics, analytical chemistry, method development and product development are required.  Experience in successfully managing collaborative relationships at work e.g. between functions, with customers or co-suppliers would be an advantage.

     o    Conceptual capacity/flexibility – Quickly grasps different concepts.  
     o    Curious, knowledgably, and creative mindset and is seen as someone who applies knowledge creatively and intelligently to the solution of problems.
