The Process Safety Leader (PSTL) is the primary technical contact for a Business and/or Process Technology for Process Safety Management (PSM). The PSTL combines a deep understanding of the process technology and its inherent hazards with a strong level of expertise in process safety management. In addition to these technical capabilities, the PSTL is passionate about process safety.
On this role, you will work in partnership with COE, BU and/or sub-BU Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) organization, Manufacturing Technology (MT) and Plant Operations, where the PSTL has primary PS responsibility for technology and processes. You will report administratively to the Global MT Process Safety Expertise Leader, with a strong functional alignment to the Business MT Leader, Corporate Process Safety Management Leader, Business EH&S Leader and the EH&S Center of Excellence (COE) Leader.
The role involves frequent interaction with Operations, EH&S and MT personnel at all levels of the organization and as such requires the ability to work with Site Leaders / Facility Leaders, including reviewing and explaining the facility’s process safety hazards, and arguing / providing the case for any proposed or necessary gap closure measures and/or risk mitigation strategy for that facility. The PSTL is a Member of the Corporate PSM One team.
Process Safety Technology Leader Responsibilities:
- Leads and/or participates in development of long-term strategy for process safety technology.
- Participates in defining short term objectives for process safety technology.
- Tailors as needed corporate tools and templates for the relevant process technology(ies) to help facilitate process safety and hazard assessment reviews, e.g. PHA; LOPA; etc.
- Participates and/or facilitate project Process Hazard Analyses (PHA’s) for High Process Safety Risk (HPSR) facilities.
- Supports the site Process Safety leader on hazard analyses, including review and approval - for completeness and quality – of all key facility process safety deliverables:
- Hazard assessments (High Process Safety Risk / Process Safety Risk)
- Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and/or Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA)
- Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) Workbooks
- Ensures leveraging and understanding across business / process technology of:
- Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and/or Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA)
- LOPA Scenarios and Workbooks
- Best practices
- PS Near Misses One Pager Lesson Learned and/or Incident Investigation reports
- Evaluates development and/or introduction of new technologies from a process safety point of view.
- Participates as the Process Safety Technical Expert in Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA's) for all PSI Level 1-3 events in his/her area of responsibility.
- Acts as the Process Safety Reviewer for all High Risk MOC's (if/where applicable in business).
- Is a member of the MOC review team for personnel starting in one of the following leadership roles in the business (if/where applicable in business) – site or plant leader.
- Is a member of the MOC educational team for personnel starting in one of the following leadership roles in the business (if/where applicable in business):
- Business President
- Business Vice President - Operations
- Business Leader - Manufacturing Technology (MT)
- Provides guidance and interpretation of corporate and/or Regulatory and/or RAGAGEP process safety requirements as they pertain to the process technology.
- Gives guidance on and deliver PSM training program for the business unit, e.g., LOPA, PHA, DHA, reactive chemicals, PSM One Guidebooks, etc.
- Leads network of Site Process Safety Leaders (Focal Points) for the business / process technology (as applicable).
- Coaches plant/site Process Safety Leaders (or Focal Points).
- Supports other PSTL's locally / in the region as needed.
- Work with the process R&D and applications groups to execute and resource raw material & technology trials, new product scale up and commercialization.
- Drive and facilitate leveraging of knowledge & experience on issue resolution and improvement activities across the MCC/CMC network.
- Develop and implement Improvement Engineer development program
Process Safety Technology Leader Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
- Leadership or Senior role in Operations or Manufacturing Technology.
- Experience as Technology Guardian.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to defend and explain difficult / unpopular recommendations with data, facts and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices.
- Ability to speak one or more additional languages in use in the business unit including fluency in English.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time – mostly within the region, but also internationally.
- Proven ability to lead multi-functional business and network project teams.
- Experience in PSM program development and/or implementation preferred.
- Excellent presentation skills and communication skills including around senior leadership.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in Manufacturing Technology, Operations or Engineering.
- Training and/or working knowledge of process safety tools such as HAZOP, LOPA, Consequence Analysis, Dispersion Modeling (PHAST, ALOHA, etc.), etc.
- Experience in PSM program development and/or implementation.
