The IFF Research & Development facility in Dangé-Saint-Romain is the Center of Excellence for Dairy Cultures. Dedicated and specialized international scientific teams are working together to select and develop Lactic Acid Bacteria strains. We characterize lactic acid bacteria genetically and physiologically using High Throughput methods to select and improve strains that are responsible for delicious dairy products enjoyed by consumers worldwide.

 

We are looking for a Data engineer at the interfaces of software development, lab automation and biology. You will create software that automates everything that can be automated in the process (from the acquisition of the dataset to its storage) and ensures that generated data is structured and accessible. A support in management and treatment of phenotypic and genomic microbial data is also required.
  


Description

 

The candidate will be a self-starter with attention to detail, and a proven track record of contribution in a team environment. An openminded mindset is crucial to understand teams and experiments objectives. Objective is to generate appropriate dataset, make the pertinent analysis and communicate appropriately the outcomes and conclusions to stakeholders.
 

Responsabilities

 

• Create software solutions to support data acquisition and management in a structured fashion 
• Design data models to support experimental protocols and write software that automates the generation of robot instructions as well as analysis and visualization of biological sequence, and screening data
• Perform statistical analysis to support genotype/phenotype correlational studies to support strain selection
• Document, communicate and assists with training individuals on accurate data entry and use of data tools, as needed
• Identify and onboard 3rd party services and tools to offload responsibilities and let us focus on differentiating activities
• Leverage the use of database and data management tools (e.g. LIMS) from other departments
• Support the implementation of a database (SQL Javascript, Microsoft Access or other)
• Build relationships with fellow automation team members and scientists locally and globally

Job Requirements

 

Required 

 

• Master's or PhD degree in fields related to Microbiology and Data Engineering. 

• Affinity and practical experience with bacterial genetics, phenotyping and the food industry 

• Experience with statistical techniques or Machine Learning for finding geno/phenotype relationships, e.g. GWAS

• Passion and documented experience with writing high-quality, structured and maintainable code (we mostly code in Python and R)

• Fluency with data analysis using code-based tools, such as the python pandas library and R

• Knowledge in data management (usage of DBMS and their implementation)

• Ability to network, work in a team and with strong communication skills, 

• fluent English


It would be great if you 

 

• Have familiarity with data visualization and elementary statistics for interpreting noise and variability 
• Have experience with cloud computing (we use AWS and EKS for hosting)
• Have basics in Machine Learning

 

This position would ideally be located in Dangé-Saint-Romain (France) but could also be located in Brabrand (Denmark) or Leiden (The Netherlands)
