International Flavor & Fragrances (IFF) is currently seeking an Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager to join our site in Institute, WV (just outside of Charleston).  IFF is a market-leading global business serving customers across the food, beverage, taste, nourish, microbial control and pharma markets with innovative, healthy and sustainable solutions spanning a broad portfolio. The EH&S Manager reports to the Plant Manager and is part of the plant’s leadership team.  The position is responsible for the overall implementation of plant systems to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate EH&S standards.  The EH&S Manager may provide performance management for the plant’s EH&S team and work closely with all facility personnel to ensure excellent EH&S performance and full compliance with requirements.  

Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Responsible for managing site EH&S programs which includes the development, implementation and maintenance of programs.  Programs include waste water, solid waste, hazardous waste, air emissions, storm water, life-critical standards, emergency response, hazard communication, hearing conservation, personal protective equipment, injury/illness prevention and medical surveillance.
  • Overall ownership of the site’s EH&S policies that define requirements to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate EH&S standards.
  • Develop and implement improvements to safety systems to ensure compliance with requirements and continued improvement in EH&S performance including the tracking of leading/lagging KPIs.
  • Organize, lead, and participate in activities that promote employee ownership and engagement in EH&S (housekeeping, focused eyes, community outreach).
  • Oversee and coordinate the plant’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party EH&S audit programs.
  • Manage plant incident investigation program, ensuring proper classification, thorough root cause investigations and appropriate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Create “one-pagers” and communicate key learnings from events at Institute and from the broader IFF network.  Learnings shared with on-site personnel as well as sharing with the broader IFF network.
  • Provide in-plant support to site leadership, operators, mechanics, contractors, and technical staff to ensure proper safety evaluation is performed and work is completed within requirements. 
  • Complete routine field line walks (observe and engage) to provide recognition, coaching, collaboration, and training.
  • Gather data and maintain systems to track necessary information for internal safety, health and environmental reporting and to drive improvement in EH&S performance.
  • Provide support for plant training to develop and improve safety training to educate plant personnel on EH&S-related issues.  Ensure EH&S training is effective in sharing safety know-how needed to achieve world class safe operations.
  • Participate in corporate and business EH&S networks and leverage best practices.
  • Implement case management, working closely with plant leadership and site’s occupational health contractor to manage injuries to the lowest level possible.  Ensure proper injury, illness classifications and OSHA record keeping is completed.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
  • Participate as part of the Plant Leadership Team to manage overall plant needs.
  • Maintain EH&S operating discipline.
  • Work with other EH&S personnel within a Tech Park environment to support overall site EH&S initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related safety or environmental field
  • Five or more years of demonstrated EH&S functional/technical expertise with strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Experience implementing & maintaining site wide safety related programs.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Customer focused mindset.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively, professionally and respectfully in a team-based environment to involve peers, customers, line management and technical competency experts.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence teams and resolve conflicts in support of organizational goals.
  • Experience with organizational culture change/development.
  • Demonstrated strong data management and analytical skills.

 

The following are preferred: 

  • Previous experience with SAP
  • Previous experience working in cGMP process
  • Understanding of ISO requirements
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably chemical)
