Overview

 

The essence of this position is to establish, implement and oversee the new IFF International Trade Compliance policy and program to ensure IFF is in compliance with the rules and regulations impacting global trade. The scope of this position includes ownership of the IFF global trade controls policy, which governs  US, UK and EU import and export regulations, including sanctioned sales to sensitive destinations as defined by the US, UK, EU and elsewhere. The Director, International Trade Compliance may also be called upon as a key member of the IFF Crisis Management Team, in relevant situations.

 

This position will report into the Head of Regulatory Science & Advocacy (RSA), who in turn reports into the Vice President of Global Regulatory Affairs (GRA) .  
This position will hold a great deal of responsibility for establishing the new IFF harmonized trade controls policy and sanctioned sales procedure and will serve as Lead of a cross-functional trade compliance team spanning the Legal, GRA, and Global Trade Operations departments.

Major Accountabilities Include:

 

  • Strategy (25%) - Direct and provide strategy for the design and oversight of the trade compliance platform which consists of the policies, procedures and systems to support global trade compliance activities. Develop, promote and effectively manage strategic relationships and interface with internal and external entities and personnel at multiple levels and in various disciplines to provide tactical and transactional service related to import and export compliance, and related regulatory matters while supporting continuous improvement. Influence strategic and tactical sourcing decisions with respect to preferential duty treatment, quotas or other import restrictions or trade remedies, export restrictions, free trade agreements and other related factors.

 

  • Compliance (25%) - Create and maintain recordkeeping systems (including digital systems) to ensure the ready access of documents for compliance purposes. Collaborate with the IFF Audit team to develop an internal audit programs to ensure all operations globally are consistent with IFF’s import and export compliance policies and procedures and all legal and regulatory requirements.

 

  • Leadership  (25%) - Develop and manage IFF’s Export Compliance Program, including: maintaining and improving systems for customer and transaction screening; managing global compliance with sanctions and embargoes and with anti-boycott rules; supporting the legal department in ensuring compliance with anti-corruption/anti-bribery laws; developing and maintaining an export classification process for all company products, components and technology; managing applications for export licenses as required; and ensuring the generation and filing of correct documentation for licensed export transactions. Develop and manage staff of regional compliance personnel responsible for ensuring compliance with respect to import & export regulations, business relationships with service providers, and internal auditing of IFF’s trade activities in their regions. Coach and mentor team members and provide career development opportunities through training and professional networking.

 

  • Communication (15%) - Communicate global international trade compliance policies, procedures and programs across all business units and act as lead internal resource for all units for international trade compliance. Provide advice to operating units covering foreign and US global trade compliance including country-specific import or export restrictions or special programs. Leverage the company’s information technology systems to enhance compliance procedures and manages SAP GTS data accuracy.

 

  • Issue Management (10%) - Identify and communicate current or emerging issues

 

Required Background and Skills

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, International Trade, Supply Chain, Political Science, or Law
  • 10-12 years’ experience in US or EU global trade compliance, including government trade laws and regulations. Experience in import/export regulations and customs compliance. 
  • Five years directing, overseeing, managing, leading and developing work teams. Strong interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural effectiveness
  • Project Management skills
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving attitude
  • Knowledge of global trade regulations or at least US and EU
  • Participation in trade associations
  • Excellent presentation and training skills
  • Full working proficiency in English

 

Preferred Background and Skills

 

  • Master’s Degree in Law or Business
  • EU or US export compliance certification
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complicated regulations into clear and actionable compliance measures
  • Full working proficiency in additional European languages, i.e. French, Dutch or German

 

Job Location

 

Ideally Leiden or Hilversum (the Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium). Potentially also in the US (east coast)
