Our probiotics and cultures business is looking for a Process R&D Engineer who will help make practical leaps in technology through meaningful research and bring healthy products to market. Team success looks like commercializing strains with new health benefits and changing the market in dairy by generating more productive strains.
Responsibilities include:

  • Providing support to develop fermentation and downstream processes, manage bioprocess development related projects, and implement or transfer processes for probiotic and dairy strains.
  • Develop and implement improved, cost-effective manufacturing conditions for scale- up of products/processes from laboratory to commercial scale:
    • increasing fermentation yield; 
    •  increasing cell density;
    •  increase cell robustness and stability of cell cultures.
  •  Coordinate/oversee the Pilot-scale manufacturing of experimental products by working directly with Production operators and supervisors
  •  Follow process data and product quality after industrialization.  Evaluate and troubleshoot problems that may arise in the process.
  • Implement the transfer of product from site to site and transfer of new processes/products from Process R&D to production.
  • Participate in team meetings on new processes/recommendations and help evaluate their impact on the plant.  Collect process information as necessary
  • Manage projects by providing clear definition, evaluating tasks, planning, coordinating, and following-up to assure proper completion. 

 In alignment with these responsibilities, it would be helpful for the Engineer to be familiar with: 
•    Industrial fermentation practices/trends and current with trending literature;
•    Downstream processing including freeze drying, liquid/solid separation techniques and blending.

Job Requirements

•    Degree in relevant field of study: Chemical engineering, Biochemical engineering, Biological engineering
•    Masters + 2 years of experience preferred
•    Bachelors + 5 years of experience preferred
Technical Skill set
•    Relevant experiences would include fermentation, lyophilization, cGPM operations, statistical process optimization.
•    Basic statistical techniques to evaluate variables on performance criteria and investigate root cause analysis
•    Prepare internal and external reports.  Prepare routine project summaries and communicate progress to management. 
•    Six Sigma Greenbelt preferred
•    Experience in a manufacturing setting preferred
Collaborative Skill set

•    Work together with technicians, assistant scientists, scientists, and engineers in developing new products, optimizing current products, and scaling up products/processes from laboratory to commercial scale.
