Our research focuses on the discovery of next generation probiotics, postbiotics, prebiotics and biological solutions driven by our state-of-the-art microbiome research using a systems biology approach..

 

We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist to lead foundational and method development research related to probiotic physiology. A successful candidate will apply microbiology, molecular biology, and multiomic approaches towards a greater understanding of probiotic performance in host systems and cell survival and enumeration in delivery applications. This position will work cross-functionally with global IFF technical teams involved in pre-clinical/clinical studies, microbiomics, applications and manufacturing.

 

Essential to the process are a thorough understanding of microbial physiology, metabolism, viability, and genetics, as well as the demonstrated ability to leverage a polyphasic, holistic approach to determine cell health and cell functions at the gene level. The individual is expected to be able to function both independently and within a project team environment by providing the technical expertise for the research and development of new products, methods, processes and basic knowledge in support of business directives. The incumbent will lead, develop and implement a probiotic physiology platform.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct research on business directed projects through the application of microbiological and molecular biology methods and approaches to develop new products and technology in support of the Health & Biosciences Division.
  • Lead and develop a microbial physiology research platform
  • Develop project plans in conjunction with Group manager and Project leaders.
  • Independently execute research plan to include experimental design and documentation.
  • Interpret results and formulate future research actions or alternative technical solutions.
  • Communicate research internally and externally.
  • Become a technical expert, resource, and mentor – microbial physiology, genetics and molecular biology – focus towards lactic acid bacteria.

Job Requirements

  • Experience commensurate with a Ph.D. with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience in related field or BS/MS with a minimum of 15+ years of relevant experience (dependent on degree).
  • Trained in Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field with an emphasis in microbial physiology and genetics.
  • Experienced in using flow cytometry and omic (transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics) tools to profile cell fitness and function, and identify biomarkers of probiotic efficacy and application robustness.
  • Knowledge of cell survival mechanisms (e.g., viable but not culturable), physiological parameters of viability (e.g., membrane integrity, ATP, etc.), and phenotypic-genotypic connections as it relates to cell performance is highly desirable.
  • Experience with selective agar plate and rapid molecular enumeration methods, including digital PCR;
  • Familiar with genotyping, phenotyping, next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics techniques to identify and characterize bacterial physiology and function within a host
  • Basic knowledge and experience with molecular biology methodologies desirable: nucleic acid manipulation and sequence analysis with an understanding of bioinformatics.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, manage, and perform multi-task projects to a successful result.
  • Experience in project management; planning, tracking and reporting, desirable.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills for presentation of scientific concepts and results to internal and external customers.
