The Process Safety Technology Leader (PSTL) is the primary technical contact for a global region for operations for Process Safety (PS). The PSTL combines a deep understanding of the process technology and its inherent hazards with a strong level of expertise in process safety risk & management.  In addition to these technical capabilities, the PSTL is passionate about process safety.

He/she works in partnership with other global PSTL colleagues, the IFF CoE, relevant BU and/or sub-BU Environment Health & Safety (EH&S) organization, Manufacturing Technology (MT) and Plant Operations. The PSTL reports to the Global MT Process Safety Expertise Leader, with a strong functional relationship with the Corporate Process Safety Leaders, Business EH&S Leaders and the EH&S Center of Excellence (COE) Leader. The PSTL provides support within his/her home region but will also be called upon to provide support to facilities in other regions where required.

The role involves frequent interaction with Operations, EH&S and MT personnel at all levels of the organisation and as such requires the ability to work with Site / Facility Leaders, including assessing, reviewing and explaining the facility’s process safety hazards, and providing the justification for any proposed gap closure measures or risk mitigation strategy for that facility. The PSTL is also a Member of the Corporate PS Extended team.

Process Safety Technology Leader Responsibilities:

•    Leads and/or participates in development of long-term strategy for process safety technology.
•    Participates in defining short term objectives for process safety technology.
•    Develops corporate tools and templates as required for the relevant process technology(ies) to help facilitate process safety and hazard assessment reviews, e.g. PHA; LOPA; etc.
•    Participates and/or facilitates project Process Hazard Analyses (PHA’s) for High Process Safety Risk (HPSR) facilities. 
•    Supports sites through facilitation, quality review, participation, training or leadership of all key facility process safety deliverables such as: 

  • Hazard Identification Risk Assessments (HIRA)
  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and/or Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) 
  • Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) Workbooks

•    Ensures leveraging and understanding across region / business / sister site process technology of:

  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and/or Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) 
  • LOPA Scenarios and Workbooks
  • Best practices
  • PS Near Miss One Pager Lesson Learned and/or Incident Investigation reports

•    Evaluates development and/or introduction of new technologies from a process safety point of view.

•    Participates as the Process Safety Technical Expert in Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA's) for all PSI Level 1-3 events in his/her region of responsibility.

•    Acts as the Process Safety Reviewer for appropriate MOC's

•    Is a member of the MOC / senior leader review team for new site leaders.
•    Is a member of the MOC educational team for personnel starting in one of the following leadership roles in the business (if/where applicable in business):

  • Business President
  • Business Vice President - Operations
  • Business Leader - Manufacturing Technology (MT)

•    Provides guidance and interpretation of corporate and/or Regulatory and/or RAGAGEP process safety requirements as they pertain to the process technology.
•    Develops, provides input on and delivers PS training program, e.g., LOPA, PHA, DHA, reactive chemicals, PS Guidebooks, etc.
•    Leads network of Site Process Safety Leaders (Focal Points) for the region, business or process technology (as applicable).
•    Coaches plant/site Process Safety Leaders (or Focal Points).
•    Supports other IFF PSTL's in the region or other regions as needed.


Required Qualifications and Experience:

•    Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
•    Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in Manufacturing Technology, Operations or Engineering.
•    Training and/or working knowledge of process safety tools such as HAZOP, LOPA, Consequence Analysis, Dispersion Modeling (PHAST, ALOHA, etc.), etc.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Competences:

•    Leadership or Senior role in Operations or Manufacturing Technology.
•    Experience as Technology Guardian.
•    Strong interpersonal and influencing skills.
•    Ability to defend and explain difficult / unpopular recommendations with data, facts and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices.
•    Ability to speak one or more additional languages in use in the region including fluency in English.
•    Ability to travel up to 25% of the time – mostly within the region, but also internationally.
