We are hiring a Scientist to join our Health & Biosciences division as a Sr. Research Scientist!

The successful candidate will apply cutting-edge spectroscopic and chemometric techniques and methodologies to the development of innovative and creative food products and processes, helping to deliver the next generation of plant-based protein solutions to consumers. Also need to be a highly motivated and results-driven Spectroscopist & Chemometrician to work in the Advanced Analytical Biosciences group located in the Cortex Innovation Community in St. Louis, MO.


  • Use expert knowledge of and skills in spectroscopy, chemometrics, and image analysis to help design and develop functional food ingredients, molecular systems for foods, and innovative product offerings focusing on plant-based protein
  • Apply a broad range of spectral and imaging methodologies as well as complex physical-organic knowledge to characterizing chemical processes and structure of plant protein-based beverages and meat analogues at the molecular level
  • Utilize skills in spectroscopy and chemometrics to support all business units across the organization (e.g. pharma, emulsifiers, pectin, etc.) as needed.  In addition, assist Quality in addressing customer questions (e.g. identification of foreign materials) as they arise with respect to products
  • Work closely with product developers to evaluate bench level prototypes, support pilot and commercial scale trials, and help to strengthen and reinforce the case for product feasibility to the business by generating, analyzing, and reporting sound technical data
  • Provide direct support to Manufacturing and Quality by championing spectroscopic initiatives aimed at developing and maintaining calibration models for techniques such as in line or at line NIR spectroscopy
  • Have direct working knowledge of and expertise in several of the following areas: NIR, FTIR, Raman, NMR, CD, XRF, X-ray Tomography, Hyperspectral Imaging, Advanced Microscopy, Imaging, Automation
  • By adept at advanced method development and complex statistical methods and chemometric techniques such as, but not limited to, PCA, PLS-DA, MCR, Cluster Analysis, etc.  Expert user of software such as JMP, Minitab, PLS Toolbox, etc
  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, both internally with product development teams, quality, regulatory, and business partners as well as externally with networked analytical laboratories, manufacturing sites, and customers
  • Contribute to skill development and mentoring for junior colleagues.  Be open to teaching as well as learning

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Imaging Science or a closely related field with direct experience in plant-based protein spectroscopic and chemometric analysis
  • Minimum of 6-10 years of experience, preferably in the food ingredient industry or academia
  • Strong record of innovative chemistry or closely related research (publications, presentations, patents, etc.)
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative team-oriented environment.  Interpersonal skills, adaptability/flexibility, and ability to function effectively as part of a diverse team is of the highest importance
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational and multitasking skills, and the ability to interact and collaborate across various functional levels and geographical regions is a must
