IFF is seeking a Formulation Scientist - Microbial Delivery to join our team in Wilmington, DE! IFF Health and Biosciences is a leading provider of sustainable solutions for food and health industries that provides world class probiotics, proteins, emulsifiers/sweeteners, cultures, drug excipients, enzymes, and bioactives. The Formulation Team is seeking to grow our microbial delivery team to accelerate the development of animal and human health microbiome product portfolio. This is a hands-on position requiring leadership from the lab. You will join our innovative, multi-disciplinary group to support our diverse range of microbial delivery programs. You will partner with regulatory, marketing, and manufacturing to translate customer needs into real, innovative solutions leveraging your deep expertise in microbial delivery. 

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Ideal candidate will lead the projects on developing novel scalable processes and microbial formulation delivery systems in stabilizing bacteria, fungi or yeast for extended storage and efficacy during product applications 
  • Support multiple parallel formulation projects while effectively updating and communicating with internal stakeholders and teams
  • Direct research by providing timely feedback and formulation insight to aid in the discovery of new technology and its optimization in cross-functional teams 
  • Prepare technical reports, data summaries, presentations, protocols, and other technical and regulatory documents as needed
  • Participate in developing the intellectual property strategy and file patent applications in collaboration with peers and the legal team
  • Use of statistical software and experimental design to model, predict, and execute complex formulation and mixture designs
  • Contribute to skill development and mentoring of junior formulation scientists

Job Requirements

  • PhD with 2-4 years experience, MS with 4 – 6 years experience or BS with 6-10 years experience in microbiology, cell physiology, food science, fermentation, biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, formulation science or related field
  • Experience with formulation process technologies such as freeze-drying, spray drying, fluid bed granulation, cryopreservation and microencapsulation, with specific focus on stabilizing live microbes (bacteria, fungi or yeast)
  • A minimum of 3-5 years industrial or academic employment in the design, development and scale up of stable microbial formulations
  • Proven track record of success in developing and scaling up microbial products
  • Team player, able to work with multi-disciplinary team and external collaborators
  • Exposure or interest in robotics and high throughput
  • Exposure and experience using statistical software for modeling and communicating large data sets
  • Hands-on-mentality and a strong affinity for lab work
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes, manage multiple projects in parallel, and thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
