Job Description

 

IFF is seeking a Senior Scientist – Household Formulations to join our team in Wilmington, DE! IFF Health and Biosciences is a leading provider of sustainable solutions for food and health industries that provides world class probiotics, proteins, emulsifiers/sweeteners, cultures, drug excipients, enzymes, and bioactives. The Biochemistry and Research Applications Team is seeking to grow our household care formulation team to accelerate the development of key ingredients for greener and more sustainable home care products. You will join our innovative, multi-disciplinary group to support our diverse range of homecare biological active programs in cleaning and hygiene. As part of application research, you will work in research and development partnering with technical service, regulatory, marketing, and manufacturing to translate customer needs into real, innovative solutions leveraging your deep expertise in detergents, fabric conditioners, and/or hard surface cleaners. You will have a unique opportunity in shaping and leading the future direction of this team.

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • Expand inhouse household care formulation knowledge and expertise
  • Lead the design and execution of home care formulation studies to explore structure-property relationships of novel, bio-based ingredients. 
  • Build and develop new home care formulation bases utilizing market intelligence to drive the selection of candidate actives and functional materials.
  • Perform industry standards testing and analysis to translate technology and product benefits to customer value propositions.
  • Invent and create new R&D oriented methods and test procedures which translate industry standards into more efficient screening assays such as automation and digitalization.
  • Use of statistical software and experimental design to model, predict, and execute complex formulation and mixture designs.
  • Perform detailed colloidal and interfacial science analytical assays as needed to develop mechanistic insights into active and functional material performance.
  • Support multiple parallel hygiene and cleaning projects while effectively updating and communicating with internal stakeholders, teams, and some of our largest customers. 
  • Direct research by providing timely feedback and formulation insight to aid in the discovery of new technology and its optimization in cross-functional teams 
  • Prepare technical reports, data summaries, presentations, protocols, and other technical and regulatory documents as needed.
  • Participate in developing the intellectual property strategy and file patent applications in collaboration with peers and the legal team.
  • Contribute to skill development and mentoring of other formulation scientists.

Job Requirements

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Sciences (such as Chemistry, Biology, etc.) with 10 to15 years of household formulation experience, or Master’s in Sciences with 8 or more years of industrial research experience, or PhD in Sciences with 6 or more years of household formulation experience. 
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific research in household care and ability to address complicated biology questions, as in peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, or patent filings.
  • In-depth knowledge of fabric and hard surface detergent application, the detergent industry and detergent formulations (e.g. Liquids and unit does) 
  • Knowledge in laundry application test protocols and enzyme technology 
  • Exposure and experience using statistical software for modeling and communicating large data sets. 
  • Exposure or interest in robotics and high throughput.
  • Hands-on skills in utilizing HPLC, GC, and Mass Spectroscopy are desired.
  • Familiarity with microbiological standards used in odor, sanitization and disinfection testing
  • Demonstrated hands-on-mentality and a strong affinity for lab work.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes, manage multiple projects in parallel, and thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Supervisory experience a plus

 

Position will be based in Wilmington, DE with hybrid work options available

 

Travel – 10% globally
