IFF Nutrition and Biosciences is a leading provider of sustainable solutions for food and health industries that provides world class probiotics, proteins, emulsifiers/sweeteners, cultures, drug excipients, enzymes, and preservatives. The Biochemistry and Research Applications Team is seeking a Senior Scientist with expertise in metabolomics and microbial physiology to join our innovative, dynamic, and multi-disciplinary group and support a diverse range of R&D projects with IFF’s local and global R&D communities. In this role, close collaboration with chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, microbiologists, computational biologists, and biochemical engineers is expected. The successful candidate should be adaptive, self-motivated, with a passion for science, and thriving in a team environment. The position will be located at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, and mainly laboratory based.




  • Lead the design and execution of experiments to deliver a diverse set of metabolomics data, using targeted and non-targeted metabolomics approaches as well as stable isotopic labeling methods and metabolic flux analysis.
  • Build and develop metabolomics workflows, including preparation of microbial-sourced samples, full use of UPLC-high resolution MS instrument capabilities for sample analysis, and identification of metabolites of project’s interest.
  • Evaluate and develop new technologies in the field to keep improving the workflows.
  • Use informatics/software tools for analysis and visualization of complex data from metabolomics experiments to evaluate cellular metabolism. 
  • Support multiple projects and their advancement. Collaborate with group members and cross-functional teams on integrating multi-omics data and provide microbial physiology insights for strain or process development.
  • Prepare technical reports, data summaries, presentations, protocols, and other technical and regulatory documents as needed.
  • Participate in developing the intellectual property strategy and file patent applications in collaboration with peers and the legal team.
  • Contribute to skill development and mentoring for colleagues.

Job Requirements



  • PhD in metabolomics, systems biology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline with at least 3 years working experience in industrial or academic lab(s).
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific research showing evidence of expertise in metabolomic and ability to address complicated biology questions, as in peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, or patent filings.
  • Demonstrated extensive experience in design, execution, and interpretation of metabolomics experiments.  Experience with (multi-) omics research (transcriptomics, proteomics, and genomics) will be a plus.
  • Skilled in using bioinformatic/software tools for analysis and visualization of metabolomics data.
  • Hands-on skills in practicing HPLC and Mass Spectrometry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in microbial physiology, metabolism, and metabolic engineering is desired.
  • Demonstrated hands-on-mentality and a strong affinity for lab work.
  • Highly motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and a team player.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes, manage multiple projects in parallel, and thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative skills.
